De-Cluttering and Preparations for Vaycay

De-cluttering is a normal occurrence at home.  Every weekend, I sort out stuff that needs to be thrown away.  Every month, I file away documents that needs to be filed.  Every end of season, we sort out clothes that needs to be donated to charity.

For the past three weekends, I've been seriously de-cluttering because of two reasons:
(1) I realized that even if I de-clutter on a regular basis, there are some things that still needs to be rid of
(2) Husband and I are going on a vacation and we need to figure out what we'll bring and make an inventory of what we have so we don't end up shopping for stuff we don't need.

The first weekend, we de-cluttered our closet and sorted out clothes, bags and shoes.  The process was physically and emotionally exhausting because it took us the whole day to finish and we let go of clothes that were dear to us.

One of the dress I gave away was the one I wore on our engagement party.  I could have kept it for the sake of being sentimental but I thought the best way was to give it away and maybe make someone else' life memorable too.

The task resulted to four big bags full of clothes, shoes and bags off to charity.

The following weekend I divided my time and sorted out
(a) my jewellery and accessories
(b) my make-up and beauty products

A few things I learned after I sorted my jewellery and accessories: I have a lot but seldom wear them; I have a lot because most of them were gifts; I should get myself a better and bigger storage box or jewellery box; and I should wear them more often.

I was able to put them in a temporary storage bag but one of the things I will look for when I'm in Manila would be a more user-friendly storage box for them.

I also safe kept the ones I will be bringing with me when we travel.  Every time we travel, I make sure I bring a set of the following: gold jewellery, Pearls, Swarovskis and some fashion accessories, plus my watches.

This task took about four hours to finish because other than sort out, I also cleaned them.

After sorting out my jewellery, I turned to my make-up, cosmetics and perfume lot.  This task was a bit easy because I didn't have that much make-up anymore.  I only buy make-up once a year now, usually at the start of the year.  One mascara, two foundation, two blush-ons, two sets of eye make-up and a couple of lipsticks and eyeliners--that's about it really, those are my basic.

Again, after sorting them out, I segregated the ones I will be bringing with me when we travel.  My little beauty area now looks like this....

Last weekend, I saved the best for last and sorted our files.  The files would refer to cards and letters we received, bills and invoices paid, travel paraphernalia and souvenirs.  I was supposed to do this task on Saturday but I actually did this on Friday night.  I stayed up til 1:30am (technically, it was Saturday when I finished) because I needed to distract myself from all the sad news about Japan and the tsunami threat in different countries.  The task of de-cluttering helped a lot in easing the sadness I felt that night, which only shows how much of a de-cluttering queen I am sometimes (take note: sometimes only, not all the time!).  Yes, whenever I feel down & depressed, one of my instincts would be to clean whatever I feel like cleaning inside the house or sort out anything I can get my hands on.

Anyway, this task was very productive because I was able to finalize all the documents we need to bring with us to Manila and I was able to make an inventory of the travel tickets and bookings we've printed out.

Now that we're done with de-cluttering and sorting out stuff, Husband and I are now focused on getting ready for our trip.

Watching the Currency Closely

The happenings in Japan is devastating.  My Husband and I had a great day on Friday and when we had coffee before going home, we checked twitter and the news was all over the net--that Japan experienced an earthquake and tsunami.  Plus, there were threats of tsunami in different countries.  We were particularly concerned because there was a tsunami alert in the Philippines and Australia.  Thank goodness, both countries were spared.

While we all know that Japan can rise above all these adversity, it's heartbreaking to watch them suffer.  After the earthquake and tsunami, now there are threats of a nuclear meltdown.  Some businesses have closed and even the world market is suffering too.  While Japan's currency is being watched, we are also monitoring the Australian Dollar, because whatever is happening in other countries, it has an effect on our currency too.  For currency updates especially the Australian Dollar the Husband and I check the Business Spectator

I hope what's happening in Japan ends soon.  And I really wish that all calamities all over the world would just end.  Let's all be safe.

Cakes and Macarons from Adriano Zumbo

Every year, every birthday, I somehow have a theme for my year.  Thinking of how my 2011 will look like, it seems that this year is all about making dreams come true.  Whether it be a big goal or a small endeavour, I'm hoping that this year will be about making some of my dreams come true.

For more than a year, I've been lusting over, Adriano Zumbo's cakes and macarons.  I've been planning and imagining how I'll go to his cafe in Rozelle or his patisserie in Balmain, but my plans never materialized.

Adriano Zumbo is no ordinary patissier. His creations elicit admiration from critics and the public alike and for good reason; they’re unique in concept and execution – quite simply, you won’t find anything else quite like it in Australia.

Inspired by the world around him, his desserts tell a story or take on the personality of their namesakes. Whether it’s Lukas Rides the Tube or Escape From a Columbian Rainforest; Adriano’s fertile mind, exceptional skill and natural curiosity for unlikely ingredients are his biggest assets.{

On my birthday, a simple dream came true (that's a good sign, don't you think?).  I wanted to spend my day in Manly Beach and it so happened that Adriano Zumbo opened a new patisserie branch there.  Luck was on my side.

The patisserie is small and inconspicuous but even from afar, we already smelled the aroma of freshly-baked pastries.  The Husband said, "We are definitely here."

We bought two small cakes from Adriano Zumbo's Summer Collection 2011, one for me and one for the Husband.

The cake I chose to be eaten on my birthday was called Gary's Mangoes.  I chose it because it's a fruity cake and I love mangoes, very summer-y.

It is made of Macadamia flourless biscuit base, burnt vanilla Brulee, vanilla pepper meringue, macadamia cremeux, mango jelly and a mango mousse.  Sounds yum and tasted very yum hehe.

The fusion of sweet and a bit of tangy, plus the real chunks of mangoes.  It was deliciously creative.  I loved it!

The Husband's choice was of course, something chocolate-y.  The cake he chose was Wheely Carry Me Mel.

An ensemble of Hazlenut dacquoise with caramel mascarpone mousse, caramel maison, salted chocolate plates and caramel cream. This cake is rounded off with dark chocolate and rolled in chewy caramel

It was supposed to look like this (photo below taken from Adriano Zumbo's website) but since we took this cake home and it was a very hot day on my birthday, the insides melted and looked liked that (photo above).

But it still tasted great!  The inside of the cake looked like this.  Very rich but does not overwhelm.  The best part for me was the chewy caramel because it wasn't too sweet.

Macarons in different flavors:
Clockwise: Marshmallow (pink), Chocolate (brown), Apricot & Rosemary (green), Vanilla (beige), Bloody Mary (red).

The Chocolate and Vanilla flavours are a must whenever we buy macarons because it's our favorites.  The other three flavours we chose them because we wanted to try Adriano's more "exotic" macarons.  I loved the Marshmallow and Bloody Mary but the Apricot and Rosemary seemed too strong for me.  They captured the two flavours well (Rosemary and Apricot) but I probably didn't like the combination.

Adriano's macarons are the best macarons I've ever tasted.  It had the right crunch when you bite it but it's soft and fluffy on the inside.  The sensation of each macaron suddenly explodes inside your mouth.  Such a lovely gastronomic experience.

Next time, we will buy more macarons and I will take better photos hehe!

If you are ever in Sydney and you want to indulge in the best pastries, I highly recommend you visit an Adriano Zumbo Patisserie.

How I Celebrated International Women's Day

We annually celebrate International Women's Day at work but it's only this year that I got to take photographs.  I want to share with you how I celebrate International Women's Day every year--with my workmates.  What we do is invite the whole office to morning tea and raise funds.  Yes, a fund-raising morning tea in celebration of International Women's Day!

Yesterday's celebration was more special than last year because a lot of our workmates put their hand up to bake pastries.  One of our workmates even made a fondant cake with the International Women's Day logo drawn on top to represent the women we are honouring.

Very clever, isn't it?  Tasted delicious too!  Sorry, wrong angle of the cake...I should've taken the photo on the other side of the room.

Chocolate Easter Eggs!  They are available in supermarkets as early as February (right after Valentine's day).  Morning teas are never complete without Aussie chocolates.

The proceeds of our donation will go to the Oxfam Unwrapped.  In the Sepik region of Papua New Guinea, we support the Nana Kundi Crisis Centre which offers counselling services, legal support and a safe refuge for women experiencing domestic violence.  Violence and sexual assault are all too common in Papua New Guinea, with 70% of women experience domestic violence.  With our gift, we hope it'll help protect and educate women about their rights and put an end to violent attitudes and behaviour towards girls and women.

How did you celebrate International Women's Day?
